Heart Shaped Pot Holder Tutorial

How to make Heart Shaped Pot Holders
Have you ever pulled a hot pan out of the oven and burned your hand through the pot holder?  Yeah, me too.  When I have to grab a couple of pot holders and double up, I know it is time to make some new ones.

I started perusing the internet and came across this great pattern and tutorial for these really cute heart shaped pot holders.  I found them on Dresden Carrie's Blog.  I downloaded her Heart Shaped Pot Holder pattern but put my own spin on putting them together.  You need to go check her out, she has some really great ideas. http://www.dresdencarrie.com/2013/01/valentine-heart-oven-mitt-pattern.html

I decided I wanted a quilted look, however I didn't have an old quilt to cut up so I dug into my scrap bin and started randomly piecing scraps together until I had a big enough piece to cut out my pattern.

I used Insul-Bright heat resistant batting for the bottom batting and high loft quilt batting on the two upper pieces.  I also used a layer of flannel between the batting and the fabric on the back.  The flannel will absorb any moisture.
I took these to my sewing machine and did a basic straight quilting pattern through all three layers.

I quilted all three sections the same way.

At this point I sewed a biased binding to the two top pieces on the straight edge.  (I made the binding from the same fabric that I used for the back of the pot holder).

Once the top two pieces had their binding attached, It was time to place the top pieces onto the bottom heart shaped piece and line them up as shown below. I then placed those three pieces on top of the back piece, pinned together and sewed all the way around the outside edges.

I used the rest of my biased cut binding and sewed it all around the outside edges to cover the rough edges and added a loop for hanging.  I am really pleased with how it turned out.
